There are many options how to travel between Stockholm and Gothenburg and that’s great! People like having options. Whereas some prefer cheap transfers, others are looking for convenient and quick options. I made a summary of all of them so you can choose the one which fits you best. Since I travel a lot around Sweden, I also tested all of these travel options for you. I rated them based on my experience and the ratings might help you decide which means of transport you’ll choose 🙂
Compare means of transport between Stockholm and Gothenburg
Travelling between two major cities is usually easy, but the price, comfort and travel time can vary a lot. Stockholm – Gothenburg is Sweden’s busiest long-distance route, so competition is strong and that’s great news for travellers. Below you can find all options including prices and times. First, see the quick comparison in the table below and then we compare all of the options more in depth.

The fastest and most comfortable travel between Stockholm and Gothenburg – by train
The most popular way to travel between Stockholm and Gothenburg is by train. It’s fast, comfortable and environmentally friendly. I myself use this option in majority of cases since I can work onboard, I can buy snacks and coffee, and I can also watch beautiful Swedish landscapes on the way 🙂
The main train operator on this route is SJ. Their high-speed trains connect Stockholm Centralstation and Göteborg Centralstation in around 3.5 hours. Trains run very frequently – usually at least once per hour. Prices vary a lot depending on demand and how early you book. One-way tickets typically cost from 245 SEK (fast trains 3,5 hours), and from 195 SEK (slower trains – 5 hours). Be aware that prices rise if you book closer to the departure date and that last-minute tickets can be very expensive.
Another popular train company is VR. They operate modern trains on the same route, often with very competitive prices from 219 SEK. Travel time is similar to SJ (around 4 hours) and onboard comfort is excellent. I personally like VR a lot if I find a good deal.
Both companies offer Wi-Fi, power sockets and a bistro onboard. If you want speed, comfort and the chance to work or relax during the journey, the train is clearly the best option. Both SJ and VR usually release tickets 3 to 6 months in advance but this can vary.
The most flexible journey between Stockholm and Gothenburg – by car
Driving between Stockholm and Gothenburg is another popular option, especially if you are travelling in a group or want to explore places along the way. The distance is around 470 km and the drive takes approximately 5–6 hours, depending on traffic and stops.
You can either use your own car or rent one. Fuel costs are usually comparable to a train ticket if you share the car with more people. The biggest advantage is flexibility – you can stop at lakes, small towns or nature reserves on the way. The downside is, of course, traffic and parking in both cities.
I myself use car if I want to travel around Gothenberg or if I want to explore something on the way from Stockholm. There is so much to see and you have two possible routes:

Both routes are popular and the choice really depends on whether you prefer speed or variety. The southern route via Jönköping is the most direct and usually the fastest option, leading you mainly along the E4 and road 40, with a nice stretch along Lake Vättern. It’s the route most people choose if they want to get to Gothenburg as efficiently as possible.
The northern route via Västerås and Örebro is slightly longer, but also more varied, passing smaller towns, lakes and quieter countryside. There are also two national parks on the way – Tiveden and Garphyttan. If you have some extra time, they are definitely worth visiting.
I recommend the Jönköping route if time matters, and the Västerås route if you treat the drive as part of the adventure and want to make a few scenic stops on the way.
The cheapest travel between Stockholm and Gothenburg – by bus
Buses are less popular between Stockholm and Gothenburg. The biggest bus operator on this route is FlixBus. They run several connections daily between Stockholm and Gothenburg. The journey takes around 6–7 hours, depending on traffic. Prices start from 199 SEK if you book early. It means they aren’t much cheaper than trains and they are less comfortable.
I don’t really recommend FlixBus but buses might be a good option if you need a ticket last minute. Their tickets don’t skyrocket last minute like train tickets. Simply, compare all options if price is important for you and choose the best one.
Another option is Vy Bus4You. Their buses are known for good comfort, free Wi-Fi and power outlets. Travel time are similar to FlixBus but prices are higher so I don’t recommend them either.
Is the fastest option between Gothenburg and Stockholm by plane?
Yes, you can also fly between Stockholm and Gothenburg. Flights operate mainly between Stockholm Arlanda airport and Gothenburg Landvetter airport, and the flight itself takes only about 1 hour and costs from 499 SEK.
The main airline on this route is SAS, sometimes complemented by other carriers. it might sound like this is the fastest option but when you add travel time to and from the airports, security checks and boarding, the total journey often ends up being longer than the train.
Prices can be competitive if you find a good deal, but from an environmental perspective, flying is the least sustainable option. I personally recommend the plane only if you get a very cheap ticket or need to connect to an international flight.
